Merced Girls Claim Close Win Over Golden Valley

  • Merced secures first league win of the season.
  • Golden Valley still searching for first league win.

On Wednesday night, the Merced High girls soccer team hosted hometown rival Golden Valley High at Cathie Hostetler Stadium for the Bears’ Senior Night. The stands were packed with friends, family members, and supporters. The evening was filled with a mix of excitement and emotion as the Bears took a moment before the game to honor their seniors, recognizing their hard work and commitment.

Merced and Golden Valley opened the match trading possessions as Golden Valley pushed forward early, but Merced’s defense quickly turned the ball back up field. Golden Valley relied on long shots to move the ball into their side of the field, while Merced focused on controlled passing and dribbling to build its offense. A key defensive moment came when Payton Carter blocked a Golden Valley shot attempt by Alayna Vargas, keeping the game scoreless for much of the half. Merced eventually broke through when Reyna Martinez sent the ball into the goal box, where it was then fought over between both teams, but ultimately, Julianna Carbajal finished the play, scoring for the Bears. Golden Valley’s goalkeeper, Alanni Cienfuegos, along with attentive defense from the Cougars, limited scoring opportunities for the remainder of the half, sending Merced into halftime with the advantage and the score reading 1-0.

In the second half, Merced took control of the game’s rhythm, patiently moving the ball across the field as they worked to create openings without rushing. Their defense stayed tight, cutting off Golden Valley’s attempts to break through with shots at the goal. The midfield battle remained intense as both teams fought for every chance to gain the upper hand. Golden Valley pushed the ball forward, but Merced’s goalkeeper Sophia Reyes blocked every shot attempted. As the clock wound down, Merced maintained possession by making careful passes to protect their lead. Ultimately the game closed out with a final score of 1-0.

Merced High junior Reyna Martinez highlighted the team’s improved ball movement and passing, saying, “Our strengths were moving the ball really well. Our passing was better this game.” Martinez emphasized how the win boosted the team’s motivation as they head deeper into the season, sharing that it “really motivated us” to finish the season strong.
