Merced boys soccer kicked off their season with a competitive game against the Livingston Wolves. The Bears returned to the field as the defending CCC champions and aimed to maintain that title. The atmosphere was full of anticipation as players, coaches, and fans gathered to see how the game would play out. With the game being the season opener for Merced, and second game for Livingston, both teams were focused on making a strong and lasting impression.
The Bears came out determined and quickly showed their prowess early in the game. Bears player Raymond Gonzalez broke through Livingston’s defense to score an important goal in the first half, giving the Bears a lead. The team’s communication and quick passing helped create multiple scoring chances throughout the period. However, Livingston’s goalkeeper stood strong throughout the half, blocking several key shots from Merced and keeping the Wolves within distance to even out the score. Both teams played with intensity and urgency, making for an exciting and closely contested first half where it was still anyone’s game.
The second half saw Merced maintain their energy as forward Alexander Castaneda stepped up to make a significant impact. He scored multiple goals, including a crucial penalty kick that helped extend the Bears’ lead. Castaneda’s speed and precision on the field made him a constant threat throughout the second half. Merced midfielder Jesus Gutierrez also contributed with two assists, setting up key plays that kept the Wolves’ defense under pressure. Despite Livingston’s efforts to make a comeback, Merced’s balanced offense and solid defense stayed powerful, allowing the Bears to close out the game with a 5–3 victory. The win marked a strong start to the season for Merced as they look to defend their CCC title.
After the game, Branden Puckett, a key defender for Merced, emphasized the importance of starting the season strong. He shared the team’s mindset for the game was to “go out there, [and] play as a team.” Puckett said, “The first game sets up the season… so setting a good first game is what’s important for us.” He highlighted the team’s emphasis on attacking strong, being fast and physical, and playing with heart. Senior Jesus Gutierrez conveyed the team’s goals for this season by saying, “Honestly, we want to win CCC again, and we want to make it to the playoffs and possibly make it to Nationals too.” Gutierrez also added that he was proud to get a pass to his best friend Raymond Gonzalez on a key play during the game, showing the strong friendships and relationships on the field that help Merced consistently gain points.
Merced will look to build on their strong season opener as they prepare to face the Dos Palos Broncos in their next matchup on December 1st. As defending CCC champions, the Bears showed early signs of the teamwork and determination that could carry them far this year. Livingston, despite the two losses they have this season, fought hard and will aim to bounce back as they get ready to take on the Chowchilla Tribe on December 2nd.
