The Mariposa County Grizzlies improved their record to 10-0 in the Southern Athletic League after traveling to face the Stone Ridge Christian Knights and defeating them by a score of 13-2. The win marked the second win of the week for Mariposa against Stone Ridge, giving them the season sweep against the Knights.
The game started with Mariposa loading the bases after Stone Ridge gave up two walks and hit a batter. At that point, Peyton Getty grounded out to first, bringing in the first run of the game as leadoff hitter Reid Allison scored. Laten Butler followed with a single through the infield that allowed Sandoval and Hagan to advance home. Mariposa ended the first inning with a score of 3-0.
Stone Ridge responded in the bottom half of the third inning behind aggressive baserunning. Weston Vincelette managed a walk to get on base, then advanced to both second and third on passed balls. Talon Raymer grounded out to third as Vincelette came in to score on the play. The Knights ended the inning 4-1.
Mariposa would add to their lead in the top of the fourth when a single by the Grizzlies and a pair of errors by Stone Ridge resulted in Reid Allison and Hayden Hill scoring for the Grizzlies. Stone Ridge would respond in the bottom half by capitalizing on Mariposa mistakes. Wyatt Yorba reached base on a throwing error and made it all the way to second base. A fly ball error by the left fielder and another infield error allowed Yorba to score for the Knights. The inning ended with the score reading 6-2.
Later in the sixth inning, the Grizzlies continued increasing their lead. After loading the bases, the Grizzlies picked up a run when Carmine Sandoval scored on a ground ball to first base. The Grizzlies followed that up with a pair of singles, and by the end of the inning, the score read 11-2. Mariposa picked up two more runs in the top of the seventh before Grizzlies relief pitcher John Ogilby wrapped up the game by striking out the side. Ogilbly finished the game with eight strikeouts over three innings.
Mariposa player Reid Allison shared the team’s focus coming into the game was about “hitting the ball hard” and having “better at-bats than [their previous game] Tuesday.” He explained that the team struggled offensively in their previous game, but felt good about how they responded this time around. When asked about the rest of the season, he kept it straightforward, saying the goal is “to win it all.”
With the win, Mariposa County improves to 10-0 in league play, remaining tied with Le Grand High for first place. Both Mariposa and Le Grand will play a two game series beginning at Le Grand High on April 28, and concluding at Mariposa County High on April 30. Next up for Stone Ridge Christian, the Knights travel to Delhi to take on the Hawks on April 21 at 4:00pm.
