Merced High and Golden Valley High faced off Tuesday night in a pivotal CCC matchup. Both teams entered the game tied with El Capitan High for first place. With every league win becoming increasingly important as the season enters its final weeks, the opportunity to separate from the competition presented itself to the team that was able to take it.
Set 1
Golden Valley came out aggressive early, quickly taking control behind strong serving and net play that forced Merced into early errors. The Cougars built an early run fueled by blocks and consistent pressure at the net that helped them separate quickly on the scoreboard. Merced slowly worked back into rhythm behind Pablo Santiago, who provided the team with 3 early kills. Despite the push, Golden Valley maintained control throughout, using strong blocking and consistent attacking from Jake Green to close out the set 25-18.
Set 2
Set two was much more competitive from the start, with both teams trading points early and neither able to pull away. Merced opened with stronger serving and more balanced offense, while Golden Valley responded through aggressive net play and extended rallies. The set stayed tight deep into the frame, with momentum swinging back and forth as both teams capitalized on small errors. The set eventually pushed into extra points, where Golden Valley narrowly took the match after a Merced service error extended the round and the final score read 26-24 allowing the Cougars to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
Golden Valley carried momentum into the third set and immediately set the tone with early scoring runs off Merced errors. The Cougars were in full control early with Jake Green leading the charge offensively. He finished the set with 5 kills as Golden Valley consistently found success attacking through the middle and outside. Golden Valley’s rhythm never really broke as strong serving and steady net pressure kept Merced out of sorts for most of the set. Golden Valley’s control on offense and defense stayed dominant throughout. The Cougars closed the set 25-15 and completed the sweep.
Junior Richard Saechao spoke about the team’s mindset coming into the matchup, explaining the motivation after a recent setback, “We lost to El Cap in [the fifth set] and kind of just want to come back and win CCC.” As the Cougars move forward to prepare for their final regular season games, Saechao also expressed, “We want to win CCC and make it past the first round of playoffs.”
With the loss, Merced drops to 5-2 on the season, sitting in third place after the result. The Cougars, however, improve to 6-1 and remain tied atop the standings. Next up for both teams, Golden Valley will travel to face the Atwater Falcons on April 16 at 6:00 p.m., while Merced is set for an away league matchup the same day against Buhach Colony at 6:00 p.m.
