In their season opener, Golden Valley High hosted Modesto High for a non-league matchup that gave both teams a chance to get back on the court. With new roles and a fresh season ahead, this game served as an early measure of where each side stands and what they might look like moving forward. For both teams, it was a first chance to show what they’ve worked on, find a rhythm against real competition, and start shaping the tone for the rest of the year.
Golden Valley came out strong right from the start, quickly finding their rhythm and setting the tone in dominant fashion. By the end of the first quarter, they had built a 23–4 lead, thanks to clean passing and consistent shots. Their defense was aggressive, making it hard for Modesto to get comfortable and forcing turnovers that led to fast break points. As the second quarter went on, Golden Valley kept up the intensity, moving the ball quickly and finding open shots that kept the Panthers on their heels. By halftime, the Cougars had stretched the lead to 47–11, clearly showing their control on both ends of the court. Modesto continued to have opportunities to score; however, they couldn’t seem to find a consistent flow.
The Cougars kept the momentum going after halftime, controlling the pace and utilizing their strengths on both ends of the court. Golden Valley kept the energy high, making constant layups and jump shots. On defense, they stayed tough and maintained pressure, not giving the Panthers many opportunities for redemption. By the end of the third quarter, Golden Valley had pushed their lead to 73–15, showcasing not only their scoring ability but also their teamwork, ball movement, and early season chemistry. The final quarter saw the Cougars maintain their focus, controlling the pace of the game and staying solid on defense. Modesto kept competing hard and fighting for every possession, but in the end, Golden Valley secured a quick 83–21 victory, setting a strong tone for their season.
Golden Valley senior point guard Izaivian Goode shared the team’s mindset after the game, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the sport and playing together. “We play as a team, we just like to have fun with each other, and that’s all that matters at the end of the year,” Goode said. He added that the Cougars’ goal this season is to win a playoff game beyond the first round, expressing that they have “never won a game [in the] second round of playoffs.” He commented, “I hope we get there.” With that focus and attitude, the Cougars look to build on their strong start as the season moves forward.
With a strong opening performance, Golden Valley will now turn their attention to their next challenge against the Bear Creek Bruins. Meanwhile, Modesto will look to adjust strategies and prepare for their upcoming game against the Johansen Vikings.
