The Sac-Joaquin Section girls basketball playoffs tipped off Tuesday night at El Capitan High School as the El Capitan Gauchos hosted the Patterson Tigers. El Capitan entered the playoffs after finishing first in league play and staying undefeated, while Patterson wrapped up its league standing in fourth place. With both teams shifting from league competition to section postseason play, the stakes were high as this game would conclude the season for one of the teams.
Patterson started the quarter strong, getting early points from Alyse Lomeli and Miranda Pena. El Capitan answered quickly with Madysen Dietz converting a layup off a pass. Avnoor Bains had an early steal in the first quarter that set up Alexis Valenzuela for a layup. As the game progressed, free throws became crucial for each team. Patterson struggled from the line, missing two attempts, while Leyonni Atkins hit one of two to tie the game. After Patterson reclaimed the lead, Madysen Dietz scored two points and followed that up with a long assist that led to a layup from Olivia Schneider, giving the Gauchos a close lead with the score at 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The back-and-forth continued as Patterson tried to regain control. Alyse Lomeli scored early off a pass and Nevaeh Coburn added another layup to keep the Tigers close. El Capitan responded quickly as Rayonn Maxie hit a layup, got the foul call, and converted the free throw. Patterson’s struggles from the line continued as they missed multiple free throws in the second quarter. El Capitan, however, began stringing together stops and rebounds. These led to quick points for El Capitan. Alexis Valenzuela hit a contested layup, and Avnoor Bains added a basket off a turnover, helping the Gauchos pull ahead. As the half wore on and the game became physical, both sides were pleading with officials over perceived unfair or missed calls, adding to the intensity of the game.
Everything becomes magnified in the playoffs, and this game was no exception. In the closing seconds of the first half, Bains stole the ball as Patterson attempted to run out the clock. She drove past multiple defenders, and hit a layup just as the buzzer sounded, giving El Capitan a strong finish to the half and a 29-21 lead over the Tigers.
However, the Gauchos were not done. El Capitan came out of halftime looking to extend their lead, and it showed. Rayonn Maxie scored a layup and added a free throw, while Avnoor Bains converted a basket off a pass, giving the Gauchos some separation in the score. Patterson responded with a layup from Nevaeh Coburn and a two-point shot from Alyse Lomeli, keeping the Tigers within striking distance. Both teams played strong defense, forcing turnovers and contested shots, but El Capitan was able to capitalize on steals. Madysen Dietz and Alexis Valenzuela both scored layups after intercepting errant passes. Meanwhile, Patterson continued to struggle from the free throw line. Midway through the third quarter, Avnoor Bains hit another layup and Rayonn Maxie added two free throws, helping the Gauchos pull ahead. A late layup from Dietz and another basket by Valenzuela pushed El Capitan’s lead to 39-29 heading into the final quarter.
The final quarter saw Patterson fighting to close the gap, but El Capitan stayed in control with strong passing and aggressive defense. Alexis Valenzuela opened the quarter with a deep three-pointer, and Avnoor Bains scored a contested layup to respond to a two-point shot from Nevaeh Coburn. Rayonn Maxie added a free throw, and Madysen Dietz converted a layup off a long assist from Bains. Patterson answered with baskets from Alyse Lomeli and Coburn, including a nice put-back after a timely rebound. During the fourth quarter, a technical foul was called on the El Capitan coach, but the team continued to execute on both ends. Three-pointers from Valenzuela and Dietz helped the Gauchos pull further ahead, and Bains added another layup in transition. The game ended with El Capitan securing a 55-42 victory over Patterson, moving on to the next round of the playoffs.
After the game, El Capitan senior Avnoor Bains reflected on the win and what it meant for the team. She said, “It means a lot, especially coming off of a CCC title. Our goal this year is to make a run in playoffs, and this is just one step closer to that goal.” Bains also spoke about playing as a senior, adding, “It means everything because this might be the last time I play basketball, so I’m hoping to make the most of the season.” Bains also highlighted their resilience, saying, “I think our strengths were staying together, especially with all the adversity going on with the refs, the coaches, and everybody in the stands. I think culture was a big part of today’s game.” Looking ahead, Bains said the team wants to improve on rebounding and defense: “We gave up a lot of second-chance points. We just need to be more efficient on defense, like talking and communicating.”
With the win, El Capitan advances to the next round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, where they will host the Woodcreek Timberwolves on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The Timberwolves finished second in their league, setting up what should be a competitive matchup. El Capitan extends their current winning streak to 17 games, carrying momentum and confidence as they look to make a long run this postseason.
