The El Capitan Gauchos and Enochs Eagles met at Atwater High School for the annual Bob Schanze Showcase, a showcase designed to highlight local talent and give players more exposure. Coming in at 3–0, Enochs entered the game with a bit more early-season experience and momentum, while El Capitan was only playing their second game of the year. Despite the difference in the number of games played, both teams stepped onto the neutral court looking to build off their previous wins.
The scoring started quickly, with Enochs player Louie Dill almost immediately sinking a three-pointer that gave them an early advantage. El Capitan started fast and aggressive, but Enochs was able to match their pace. As El Capitan senior guard J’Marion Ervin responded with a three-pointer late in the first quarter, the Eagles continued to find scoring opportunities throughout the period. In the final minute of the first quarter, El Capitan scored three baskets to Enochs’ one, which trimmed the score to 17–11 in Enochs’ favor at the end of the quarter. Throughout the second quarter, Enochs’ Andrey Donasco contributed key points with a three-pointer, and a two-point shot that helped keep the Eagles ahead. Enochs maintained their offensive production through the first half, allowing them to secure a 33–26 lead at halftime, but El Capitan’s efforts kept things close and competitive.
In the second half, both teams came out motivated and prepared. El Capitan’s senior forward Anthony Jones made a strong impact early in the third quarter with a dunk that gave the Gauchos a boost, followed by a key block later in the period. Martin Ruiz added a three-pointer for El Capitan, and Jones finished the quarter strong with another dunk. However, Enochs’ Joseph Ponteras answered back with significant points of his own, including a two-point shot in the final seconds of the third quarter, helping the Eagles maintain a 46–36 lead. In the fourth quarter, Ponteras continued to contribute, making two important two-point baskets to keep Enochs ahead. El Capitan player Guerin Bliss scored a two-pointer with just over two minutes left, attempting to close the gap, but Ponteras responded again with another basket in the final minutes, securing the lead. Enochs went on to win 58–44, extending their undefeated record.
After the game, Enochs senior Andrey Donasco reflected on the team’s mindset throughout the matchup. “Our mindset was just to push through adversity. We knew they were coming hot and would keep pressing us, but we got the job done,” he said, emphasizing the team’s focus on staying composed under pressure. When asked about the team’s strengths, he praised their scoring ability, explaining, “We have scorers, and the bench can come in and do their job too,” showing confidence in the Eagles’ ability to maintain production throughout the game.
With the victory, Enochs improves to 4–0 and will carry their momentum into the next game against the Calaveras Red Hawks. Meanwhile, El Capitan looks to improve after their second game of the season as they prepare to face the Justin Siena Braves.
