El Capitan Earns Close Win Against Golden Valley

  • El Capitan wins their second straight league game.
  • Gauchos have won the league series against the Cougars 2-0.
  • Golden Valley has lost their last three league games.

The Golden Valley Cougars soccer team traveled to El Capitan High, on January 30th, for their league matchup against the El Capitan Gauchos. Although the Cougars came into the game with a chance to get even in the CCC with a win, it was the El Capitan Gauchos that earned their third league win of the season by defeating the Cougars 2-1.

The Gauchos opened the game with strong possession and nearly scored within the first few minutes of the game, putting early pressure on Golden Valley. Both teams fought for control of the ball and created chances to score, and around fifteen minutes into the game, each side came close to scoring. A few moments later, at seventeen minutes in the game, the Gauchos scored first when El Capitan’s Jaan Triano blasted a long shot from across the right flank of the field into the back of the goal, giving the Gauchos a 1-0 lead.

After the goal, possession stayed even for the next stretch of the game as both teams played tough defense, which kept the score the same until thirty-one minutes into the half. At that point, Golden Valley tied the game when a deflected pass near the El Capitan goal allowed Golden Valley a chance to quickly knock in a shot that slipped past the Gauchos goalkeeper, but El Capitan stayed composed and responded with strong defense. At thirty-eight minutes in the game, the Gauchos goalie made a key block on a Golden Valley shot to keep the score tied going into halftime.

The second half followed the same pace, with both teams matching each other in possession and playing physical defense. As the time ran down, the game looked like it was heading toward a tie, but around the seventy-five minute mark in the game the Gauchos scored the final goal to take a 2 to 1 lead. After the match, El Capitan’s Andrew Rusu talked about the importance of the win and said it showed the team’s ability to stay confident and trust each other under pressure. He gave credit to his teammates for stepping up in key moments and the coach for keeping the team focused.
