El Capitan entered Tuesday night’s volleyball matchup with a 5-0 record, while their opponent, East Union High, came in at 4-1 and looked to challenge one of the area’s top programs. Although it is only preseason, the energy inside the Gauchos’ gym reflected two competitive teams measuring themselves against quality opposition early in the year.
Set 1 opened with both teams exchanging a few early points, but El Capitan gradually took control by capitalizing on East Union errors. Tyler McCreary and Tristan Xiong anchored the front line with strong blocks and powerful spikes, while East Union’s Davion Johnson kept the Lancers competitive with points of his own. The Gauchos steadily pulled ahead, using precise hitting and disciplined defense to respond to every challenge, eventually closing out the set 25-21 and establishing early momentum for the match.
Set 2 was a more contested battle, with both teams trading the lead early in the set. East Union’s James Russell opened strong with a few kills and tips that kept the Lancers in the game, but El Capitan responded with consistent passing and quick sets to Tyler McCreary and Gabriel Olvera, who each delivered multiple kills at the net. Long rallies featured strong digs and strategic attacks from both sides, and the momentum shifted multiple times as the Lancers forced errors from the Gauchos. El Capitan gradually regained control through disciplined blocking and accurate serves, closing out the set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3 opened with East Union coming out strong, taking an early lead with sharp hits and well-placed tips from James Russell. Jacob Padilla added an ace for the Lancers, keeping the pressure on El Capitan as they tried to respond. The Gauchos fought back through Gabriel Olvera and Tristan Xiong, who made key plays at the net to keep their team in the set. East Union kept up the offensive pressure and eventually closed out the set 25-18, cutting the match deficit to 2-1.
Set 4 opened with both teams trading points early, keeping the score close. East Union stayed competitive with strong hits and an ace from Jacob Padilla, but El Capitan responded with several strong plays from Tyler McCreary. Both teams battled through long rallies, testing each other’s defense, but the Gauchos gradually pulled ahead with consistent hitting and smart court coverage. El Capitan closed out the set 25-22, winning the match 3-1.
Junior captain Adam Cinco reflected on the win and the team’s performance. “We’re just really happy at the start of the season,” he said. “Our hitting and blocking were big strengths tonight. Sometimes our defense was a little off, but we picked it up at the end of the game.” He also outlined the team’s focus moving forward. “We want to work on our passing and run our offense faster. Our goal is to go undefeated again. We just want to continue our legacy.”
With the win, the Gauchos remain undefeated on the season at 6-0, while East Union drops to 4-2. The Lancers will look to rebound when they host the Ben Holt College Prep Academy on March 4 at 6 p.m. While El Capitan will stay home to face Denair High School on March 11 at 5 p.m.
