Atwater High School hosted a high-stakes Central California Conference matchup on Wednesday night as the Atwater Falcons welcomed the El Capitan Gauchos. El Capitan took the court undefeated in league play and holding the number 1 spot, while Atwater followed one game behind in second place, setting the stage for an intense and physical showdown between the two programs.
El Capitan set the tone early by winning the opening tip and scoring first, with Jordynn Middleton coming up with a steal that led to an early basket. Atwater answered when Natalia Melgoza hit a three-pointer to give the Falcons the lead, but the Gauchos responded with inside scoring from Cienna James-Gibson and steady trips to the free-throw line. The game became more physical midway through the quarter, leading to several turnovers and quick possessions for both teams. McKenzie Wilkinson knocked down a three-point shot for Atwater, but Madysen Dietz immediately matched Wilkinson with a three-point shot of her own. The Gauchos followed that up with a couple of baskets from Avnoor Bains. With 3 minutes left in the quarter, El Capitan led 15-9 and continued to control the pace. Late baskets from Leyonni Atkins for El Capitan and Isabella Villa for Atwater closed the first quarter with the Gauchos ahead 22-15.
Atwater started the second quarter strong, as Natalia Melgoza scored back-to-back layups to cut into El Capitan’s lead, making it 25-19 with just over 6 minutes left in the first half. Alexis Valenzuela answered quickly for the Gauchos with a three-pointer, followed by a basket and free throw from El Capitan’s Rayonn Maxie. However, midway through the quarter, Atwater’s Isabella Villa scored inside, and Saige Harcksen hit a three-pointer to pull the Falcons within two points, energizing the home crowd. Yet, the Falcons couldn’t stop the offensive production of El Capitan as they responded with enough free throws and field goals to keep a 38-31 lead at halftime.
The Gauchos came out focused in the third quarter, quickly extending their lead with field goals from Alexis Valenzuela and Avnoor Bains. Atwater fought back with a layup from Natalia Melgoza and a foul shot to keep the Falcons within striking distance. Midway through the quarter, Keira Mendoza contributed inside, scoring key points for El Capitan. Atwater’s offense struggled with turnovers, while El Capitan maintained control through strong rebounding and consistent scoring. With under three minutes left in the quarter, the Falcons made a late push, hitting free throws to narrow the gap, but El Capitan’s balanced attack kept them ahead. The quarter ended with the Gauchos leading 53-43, setting up a competitive final period.
Atwater came out aggressive in the fourth quarter, scoring early baskets under the net from Isabella Villa and Natalia Melgoza to cut into El Capitan’s lead. McKenzie Wilkinson hit a three-pointer that brought the crowd to life, making the game tighter. El Capitan answered back with baskets from Alexis Valenzuela and Rayonn Maxie, keeping their edge. Both teams traded points and free throws throughout the quarter, with Atwater using timeouts to try and slow down the Gauchos’ momentum. Late in the game, El Capitan’s clutch free throw shooting gave them all they needed to hold off Atwater’s comeback attempts. The Gauchos closed out the game with a 70-62 win.
Sophomore Alexis Valenzuela was the top scorer of the game with 20 points, leading El Capitan’s offense throughout the matchup. She shared that the team’s strategy was to “really lock in, work on the basics, and just play as a team.” Valenzuela also included the team’s goals for the rest of the season, emphasizing they “want to go far in playoffs” as they aim to build on their success.
With the win, El Capitan improves to an undefeated 8-0 league record, while Atwater falls to 6-2. Both teams have just two more league games left this season. El Capitan will host the Golden Valley Cougars at home on February 10th at 7:15 PM, while Atwater prepares to face the Merced Bears on their home court at the same time.
