The beginning of the school year is a season of hope, optimism, and preparation. All students feel a little older, for the first time again, as they step onto campus with a bit more responsibilities, a bit more challenges, and a bit more maturity. A perfect metaphor for this is the beginning of the high school football season. It is also a season of hope, optimism and preparation. On Friday night (8/22), the El Capitan Gauchos stepped onto the field at Stadium 76 a bit more mature, a bit more challenged, and a lot more prepared as their fans looked on, hopeful and optimistic about this upcoming season.
Even though the Gauchos had the home crowd on their side, it was the Hoover Patriots who struck first. They opened the game by holding the Gauchos offense at midfield, then they immediately drove down the field and capped off an efficient touchdown drive with a 20-yard run from running back Julian Jimenez. The home crowd at Stadium 76 became silent as they wondered whether this was the beginning of something they’d seen before.
It was the beginning, the beginning of the new Gauchos season. As if that touchdown awakened a team that needed a jolt, the Gauchos immediately responded with a three-play touchdown drive of their own that finished with an emphatic 42-yard touchdown run by Lorenzo Peters. With the extra point good, in the blink of an eye, the Gauchos had their first lead of the 2025 season.
They reclaimed the ball in Hoover territory after holding the Patriots’ offense. Six plays later, it was Lorenzo Peters, once again, who scored a touchdown on a 27-yard screen pass from Quarterback Sergio Mendoza.
Both teams then traded possessions with no scores, and as halftime neared, two things became clear: The Gauchos defense can get after the quarterback, but Hoover’s receivers can get open deep. As the clock ticked under 1:15 in the half, Hoover quarterback Cam Mobley found a Patriots receiver for a 27-yard touchdown pass, which tied the game at 13 apiece – almost stealing all the momentum from El Capitan…Almost.
On the ensuing kickoff, Gauchos returner Anthony Jones zigged to his left, zagged back to his right, picked up a few blocks, and took the ball 84 yards for a Gauchos touchdown, which put them up 20-13 at halftime.
In the second half, the Gauchos’ defense seemed to only to get better. Hoover’s first possession of the second half looked promising until they got into Gauchos territory. Gauchos Linebacker Deenpal Singh intercepted a deflected pass, but their offense was unable to capitalize on this. Finally, the Patriots got the ball back near the end of the third quarter. The Patriots continued attacking in the air, but the Gauchos tightened up their secondary at half, and as Mobley tried to find his guy deep down the middle, it was (guess who?) Lorenzo Peters who undercut the throw and intercepted it for the Gauchos.
A scary moment came for the Gauchos on their next possession. Starting quarterback Sergio Mendoza appeared to hurt his lower leg and had to come out of the game. With the game still just one possession, and plenty of time left, some wondered if the Gauchos had enough to hang on, but for the Gauchos, it was next man up.
The defense held true, once again, for the Gauchos, and new quarterback Jesse Morgan led an impressive drive that ended with a 32-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Anthony Jones, extending the lead to 27-13. That would seal it for the Gauchos as they demonstrated a consistent display of tough football across all three phases of the game.
However, as a team, they were happy with the win but far from satisfied. Head Coach Xavier Ramirez had this to say about the team’s performance: “You always have to take a ‘W’, but I didn’t like how we got it done. We got to clean up a lot, and we’re just looking to get better every day.”
The Gauchos seemed to get better as the game went on. Coach Ramirez attributes this to a simple philosophy, “You got to let your players play. They got to go in there and do their job.”
The El Capitan Gauchos are 1-0 and will hit the road next Friday (8/29) to take on the Central Valley Hawks at Central Valley High School. Meanwhile, the Hoover Patriots, 0-1, will host their first home game of the year next Friday against Santa Maria High School.
