El Capitan hosted Los Banos in a CCC league girls soccer match Wednesday night at the Gauchos’ new stadium. The game carried added significance for players as it marked El Capitan’s senior night. El Capitan started the game with an all-senior starting lineup in ties to their senior night. The Gauchos controlled much of the first half by maintaining possession and creating several scoring opportunities. Los Banos’ goalkeeper, Liliana Sandoval, played a crucial role, making key saves to keep her team in the match. The Gauchos moved the ball effectively, working hard to find openings and taking multiple shots throughout the half. Midfielder Colette Collins finally scored the game’s first goal with about 23 minutes left in the half, giving El Capitan the lead. Defensively, El Capitan limited Los Banos’ opportunities, rarely allowing them near the goal. The Gauchos also relied on their goalkeeper, Alexia Ruiz, whose strong kicks helped quickly move the ball up the field and keep the pressure on the Tigers. By halftime, El Capitan held a narrow 1-0 lead but knew the match was still far from decided.
The second half started much like the first, with El Capitan controlling possession and focusing on passing to keep the ball moving. Los Banos continued to rely on their goalkeeper, Liliana Sandoval, who made several more saves to prevent the Gauchos from stretching their lead. As the half went on, Los Banos began pushing forward more, increasing their pressure and trying to create openings to take shots. Their efforts paid off when Angela Garcia scored a goal to tie the game, bringing new energy to the match with only 20 minutes left in the game. El Capitan responded by keeping their focus on strategic positioning and smart passing, as they worked to regain control of the ball. Later in the game, Izsabella Syhaphom scored to put El Capitan back in the lead. The closing minutes were intense, with both teams creating chances to score, but El Capitan’s defense held strong to secure the 2–1 victory.
Gauchos senior captain Colette Collins emphasized the team’s strong bond after the game, saying, “Our strength is definitely our connection as a team. Our practices have really helped us develop good field vision and passing, but we also get along well, and that bond helps us play better together.” This chemistry showed on senior night, a game the captain described as “extra special,” motivating everyone to give their best effort. For Collins, the match felt like “all our years playing soccer came together,” especially with an all-senior starting lineup that made the night even more meaningful. Looking ahead, she shared the team’s goal: “Hopefully the [CCC] solo title, but even sharing it would be an honor.” The Gauchos split the season series with Buhach Colony and will need the Thunder to lose one of their next two games in order to have a chance at winning the CCC outright.
Looking ahead, Los Banos will face the Golden Valley Cougars at home on February 6, while El Capitan travels to take on the Merced Bears that same day. With their win, the Gauchos continue to hold onto first place in the league with just one game left in the regular season.
