The race to secure the CCC title in Boys Volleyball is as tight as ever after the El Capitan Gauchos defeated the Golden Valley Cougars in the first of two matchups the teams will play this season. Golden Valley entered Tuesday night’s matchup at El Capitan High undefeated in league play at 4-0, while the Gauchos came in at 3-1, looking to force a three-way tie for first place with a win against the Cougars.
Set 1
Golden Valley’s Marc Her opened the match with the first point after a long rally, followed by another Cougar point after an El Capitan error. El Capitan answered quickly, as Tyler McCreary recorded the Gauchos’ first point with a kill and followed it with an ace to give El Capitan early momentum. He helped the Gauchos build a 6-3 lead, and finished the set with 3 kills and 2 aces. Strong blocking from Gabriel Olvera and Anthony Jones allowed El Capitan to extend their lead to 21-14 as the Gauchos appeared in control. Golden Valley responded late, with Marc Her leading the push and contributing 2 aces in the set. The Cougars found hope as they rallied one serve at a time. They were able to capitalize on El Capitan errors as they slowly but surely clawed their way back in. Eventually, they were able to complete the comeback as they closed out the set on an ace from Marc Her to win 25-23.
Set 2
El Capitan struck first with an ace from Gabriel Olvera, but Golden Valley responded with an ace from Chai Her. The set stayed tight early, with both teams exchanging points. Tyler McCreary added 2 kills and a tip to keep the score tied at 5-5. Golden Valley began to pull ahead midway through the set behind consistent serving and offensive play. Chai Her recorded 3 kills in the set, while Damon Saechao added 2 kills to help extend the lead to 22-16. El Capitan attempted a late push, highlighted by an ace from Kory Moua, but a service error ended the set. Golden Valley secured the 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
With El Capitan on the verge of being swept, the Gauchos needed a dire win to keep the game going. Gabriel Olvera and Anthony Jones combined for 4 blocks early, helping the Gauchos jump out to a 6-2 lead. Tyler McCreary added 3 kills and Olvera contributed 2 kills of his own as the Gauchos extended their lead to 11-3. Golden Valley struggled with errors but showed signs of life midway through the set, as Richard Saechao and Jake Green each added a kill. Still, El Capitan maintained control and won the set 25-18.
Set 4
The fourth set opened evenly before El Capitan took control. Tyler McCreary recorded 4 kills in the set, while Anthony Jones added 3 kills and 2 blocks. Gabriel Olvera also contributed 4 blocks, anchoring the Gauchos’ defense at the net. Getsemani Guzman-Vega added an ace during El Capitan’s strong run, helping extend the lead and build momentum. Golden Valley stayed within reach early, with Jake Green recording 2 kills and Richard Saechao adding another, but El Capitan’s consistency allowed them to stay ahead. The Gauchos built a 15-10 lead and never looked back. A kill from Jones sealed the 25-17 win.
Set 5
Back to back wins by El Capitan sent a jolt through the gym as the student section raved and the team felt the rush of a possible comeback victory on the horizon. Golden Valley once again opened strong, as Marc Her recorded an ace for the first point. The set remained close as Jake Green contributed 2 kills and Richard Saechao added another to keep the Cougars competitive. El Capitan responded behind Tyler McCreary and Gabriel Olvera, who combined for 3 kills in the set. The duo was a tremendous force on offense and defense. Olvera delivered the biggest moment defensively, recording the match-winning block. The Gauchos closed out the set 15-12, completing the comeback victory in dramatic fashion.
Gauchos sophomore player Getsemani Guzman-Vega commented after the game about the team’s mindset coming in. “Just to play our hearts out, ‘cause we knew it was gonna be a tough game. You could tell, my voice is gone, we were all giving everything we had.” He also highlighted what stood out most in the win. “Probably our want for the win, ‘cause we worked so hard in practice and everything… we’ve worked so hard for this moment, so that’s why we’re all so emotional.”
Looking ahead, Guzman-Vega emphasized the team’s focus as the season continues. “Just fight for the win. Since it’s our coach’s last year, we want that title again.” He also spoke on what the result means for the standings. “It means that now we have to fight extra hard, ‘cause now that we have a chance to win, that means we have to fight harder.”
With the win, El Capitan improves to 4-1 in CCC play, while Golden Valley moves to 4-1. Along with the Merced Bears, all three teams now sit tied for first place in league, and all three teams will play again in the coming weeks. Looking ahead, El Capitan will host Buhach Colony on April 2 at 6:00 p.m., while Golden Valley travels to face Los Banos on April 2 at 5:30 p.m.
