Crosstown rivalry soccer kicked off Friday night at Cathie Hostetler Stadium as the Golden Valley Cougars traveled to Merced High to take on the Merced Bears in a highly anticipated league matchup. Both teams entered the game 1-0 in league play, making this a significant battle for CCC positioning in the standings. A filled stadium and high energy from the start gave both teams a charge that resulted in a game that lived up to the crosstown hype.
Merced got on the board early with Jesus Gutierrez scoring within the first seven minutes to give the Bears an early lead. Golden Valley answered back with emphasis, however, when Eduardo Gonzalez and Matteo Manunza each scored a goal within a few minutes of each other, rapidly rotating the momentum to the Cougars’ favor. The intensity on the field grew as both teams fought for control of the ball. As the physical play amped up, the crowd protested loudly in frustration towards the officials. At this point, the pressure of the game appeared to be felt by not just the players and coaches, but fans and officials alike.
To add to Merced’s troubles, their starting goalkeeper Johan Montes became injured in the first half, forcing the Bears to adjust defensively. Despite the setback, Merced continued to push forward, but Golden Valley managed to add another goal before halftime. Sandro Granja Nunes found the net and gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead going into the break.
The second half began in the Bears favor when Bears’ midfielder Damian Casillas scored early in the half, which kept the home team within striking distance. Minutes later, however, Golden Valley Cougars’ Cristian De Leon quickly answered back, restoring a two-goal lead at 4-2. As the Cougars once again seized the momentum, they were able to further extend their advantage when Miguel Valencia Ruelas blasted the ball into the net with 29 minutes remaining in the game. This pushed the score to 5-2.
Just when the Cougars appeared to have the game in hand, Merced’s Miguel Morragon capitalized on a rebound and knocked in a goal for the Bears, bringing the score to 5-3. Shortly thereafter, Bears forward Raymond Gonzalez added another goal, narrowing the gap to 5-4 with just two minutes left. Throughout the match, Golden Valley’s goalkeeper Daniel Castro was a key player, making eight crucial saves to keep the Cougars ahead. The final minutes were condensed with boiling tension from fans on both sides. The players matched this energy with tenacious and swift execution. However, the Golden Valley defense was just adamant enough to secure the hard-fought 5-4 victory.
Golden Valley captain Eduardo Gonzalez shared insights into the team’s approach and what the win over Merced means. “My strategy was just passing the ball, just keeping the ball up. We say that our best (offense is when we’re) attacking,” Gonzalez explained. Reflecting on the significance of the victory, he said, “This win, for us, it means a lot. We’ve had a lot of games against Merced, ups and downs, losses and wins, and we just gave our hardest (effort).” Reflecting on areas of growth, Gonzalez added, “We could have improved on making fewer mistakes, more touching, and more shooting.”
With the win, Golden Valley improved to 2–0 in league play and maintained their undefeated status early in the season. Merced fell to 1–1 but showed resilience in a tough league matchup. Looking ahead, the rivalry battles continue as Merced prepares to host the Atwater Falcons while Golden Valley returns home to host the El Capitan Gauchos.
