The Buhach Colony High School boys volleyball team hosted Delhi High School on Thursday, March 12, in a local preseason matchup. The Thunder entered the contest with a 5-2 record, while the Hawks came in at 4-4, as both teams looked to gain momentum heading into their league season.
Set 1
Buhach Colony began the opening set by taking advantage of early Delhi errors. They earned the first point after a Delhi player mishandled a return from Anthony Nieto-Virrey. Buhach player Kace Vang added early pressure with a service ace. Delhi briefly responded with a service ace from Santiago Munoz, but Buhach continued to control rallies. Fernando Garcia-Calderon recorded a block and Angadveer Virk added an attacking point as Buhach extended its lead. This was followed by a 6 point serving run from Fabian Contreras. Contreras recorded multiple aces during the stretch, helping Buhach extend the lead to 15-6. Virk later added two more aces as Buhach continued to capitalize on strong serving and Delhi mistakes. The Thunder maintained control through the end of the set and closed it out 25-9, winning them the first point.
Set 2
Buhach Colony continued its momentum into the second set as Kace Vang opened the scoring with a serve that forced Delhi to hit the ball out of bounds. Vang then added a kill on the following rally. Fabian Contreras later contributed another point for the Thunder with a hit placed near the boundary line. Delhi briefly responded with a service ace from Marco Santillan, but the point was short lived as it was followed by a service error. As the set progressed, Buhach continued to build a lead through both offense and serving. Angadveer Virk added a kill, while Contreras recorded back to back aces during a serving run. Levi Chang later added multiple aces from the service line as the Thunder created separation. Evan Lasley also finished a rally with a kill before Buhach closed out the set with a score of 25-14.
Set 3
Buhach Colony quickly took control of the third set behind another early point run. After Delhi opened with a serve, The Thunder gained momentum when Fabian Contreras stepped to the line and helped spark a scoring stretch that pushed Buhach ahead 9-1. The run was supported by multiple Delhi hitting errors and a strong attack from Angadveer Virk, including a powerful kill that knocked a Delhi defender off his feet. Buhach continued to dominate the set offensively. Virk added several more kills, while Nathan Chang later contributed three straight service aces. Delhi managed a few late points, including a kill from Marco Santillan, but the Thunder maintained control throughout the set. Buhach closed the match 25-9 after a Delhi service error, completing the game with the final score of 3-0
After the game, Buhach Colony’s Fabian Contreras shared that the team’s bond on the court is a huge factor in the Thunder’s success. “We all play together and we have chemistry. It really builds our team together. We’re all friends. We’re all family here, and that’s what I love about this team.” He acknowledged some mistakes in communication but said the team is focused on improving. “If we improve [communication], we can definitely become a more dangerous team.” Contreras has high hopes for the Thunder this year, “I think we have a great team here. The other teams are good, but I believe we have what it takes to become the ones on top and continue the legacy from 2024.” Buhach Colony finished first place in the CCC in the spring of 2024.
Both teams will begin league play next week with a home game on March 17. Buhach Colony will try to carry the momentum from this victory into its next matchup against the El Capitan Gauchos. Meanwhile, Delhi will aim to rebound when they host the Stone Ridge Christian Knights. Both games are set to begin at 6:00pm.
